Harlequin The Foxhound

We were honoured to attend the unveiling of a gravestone for Harlequin, the foxhound, in the grounds of Compton Croquet Club this week.

Harlequin was the mascot of the 9th Battalion of the Border Regiment which was billeted at the Saffrons in 1914 to 1915 before going to France. Harlequin was killed by a car in 1915 and buried close to where he died.

His grave subsequently became damaged and overgrown by vegetation before an appeal by Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life led to it becoming cleaned and stabilised.  The unveiling was jointly hosted by the Croquet Club and the Museum and attended by The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Pat Rodohan, members of the British Legion and local military.
